Women’s Walking Sandal Reviews

Versatile, surdy, comfy, and stylish, the KEEN Bali Strap Sandal is made for innumerable adventures under the sun. These comfy sandals for walking are often deemed the best sandals for walking long distances, as well.

While they may be fine to use for camping, we wouldn’t consider them a full-on hiking sandal, due to how much our toes slipped around in them in comparison to other KEEN products.

We really love them as a “tourist” shoe, great for exploring somewhat-flat land or cobblestone streets.

Choose from bright, summery shades, or a neutral black that will go with any outfit. The leather upper features adjustable straps that will give you a perfect fit every time without rubbing your feet raw.

The hydrophobic mesh lining ensures your feet stay dry and cool, while the metatomical EVA footbed cradles your feet.

This provides an excellent roll-off while walking, while the rubber/synthetic outsole absorbs shock upon impact. All-day walking will no longer exhaust your feet, but leave you ready for more exploring!

While it’s not necessarily a complaint, we did notice that the middle part of the footbed was a bit narrow which may make them a bit awkward for those with wider feet.

#2 CLARKS Women’s Arla Primrose Sandal

Did you know that comfortable walking sandals don’t always have to be sporty? That’s right! They can be feminine and flirty, just like the Arla Primrose Sandal from CLARKS!

Choose from a sophisticated selection of gorgeous colors: Red Heathered, Black, Blue, Grey, Dusty Olive, Blue/Grey, and Purple. Pair them with a pretty sundress, skirt, skinny jeans – the options are endless!

The upper is made from a textile fabric which is nice and soft against the skin and perfect for all-day use. However, it’s still notably high-quality, and will last you for years to come, if you treat them nicely.

They’re not quite as adjustable as some others on our list, but the if you want the best walking sandals with arch support the Clarks are for you!

Their signature Cloudsteppers technology provides supreme softness, with a bouncy Ortholite foam inlay to absorb shock on hard surface, along with the durable rubber sole.

With a whole 1-inch platform, it will feel like you’re walking on clouds, rather than on concrete! However, if you don’t feel like adding an entire inch to your height or don’t enjoy being so far from the ground, you may prefer an alternative.

#3 Teva Women’s Verra Sandal

Teva is a prestigious name in the world of footwear perfect for adventuring. While they have a wide array of wonderful models, we chose the Verra due to its seamless combination of femininity, style, and function.

They’re also one of the best walking sandals for flat feet, so if you need a boost in arch support, these beauties have you covered!

In fact, we literally felt like someone was massaging our feet every time we walked around in these, thanks to the cushiony Shock Pad.

There are a ton of color options available, so we’ll just mention a few: Royal Blue, Port (wine-colored), Spili Ladder Apricot Blush, Surf Taupe Multi, Grenadine, and North Atlantic.

They’re all quite interesting, unique colors which are great if you’re someone who loves footwear that turns heads.

If you enjoy water sports or just hanging out by the beach but can’t find a solid pair that feel good but can’t get wet, these are perfect for you. They’re water-ready, and have two hook-and-loop straps to adjust them perfectly to your feet.

When sandals get wet, they often start developing an unpleasant odor, which is why the Microban odor-resistant treatment was so welcome. Seriously, you can wear these all-day, everyday and still have your feet feeling and smelling fresh!

  • Sole Material: Synthetic
  • Footbed: EVA/Molded

Say you’re loving what Teva has to offer, but you don’t have the budget for a pair. That’s okay! While they’re not quite as renowned, Ryka has a very similar model called the Savannah.

As one of the best walking sandals for arch support, you’ll be supported from sun-up to sundown! The interesting color choices for us were kind of a hit-or-miss, but we couldn’t argue that the overall style was solid.

The synthetic/webbed textile upper is smooth against the skin, and won’t cause any chafing or sore points due to the three different points of adjustability.

As so many of us suffer from over-pronation and/or plantar fasciitis, the insoles are going to be one of the most important features in any shoe.

These come with a molded EVA foam, which is lightweight and bouncy while providing a certain level of firmness. The anatomically-designed Q-contour footbed is made to hold your feet in place, while the deep heel cup provides added stability.

With the notably flexible tread pattern, they give a surprising amount of grip on slippery surfaces, which is a bonus for staying safe while playing around the water.

  • Sole Material: Synthetic
  • Footbed: EVA/Molded

There are so many styles of sandals out there, we’re not sure why most of them come with thick straps. If you’re someone who’s more attracted to the thin, strappy design, then we have just the thing: the Merrell Terran Lattice II.

The more “open” design combined with the breathable mesh lining will keep your feet refreshed, cool, and dry no matter where you are. Nubuck leather straps have an almost silky feel to them, coming with padded spots to eliminate pressure points.

The more “natural” nature-inspired colors and design are perfect for active lifestyles, while the highly adjustable straps will keep your feet centered.

The heel straps are a hook-and-loop style, while the others just have Velcro, meaning you can take them on or off quickly.

What makes these some of the best walking sandals for women?

The footbed.

You’ll receive a footbed made from soft yet supportive foam, which will actually contour to the individual shape of your feet with regular use.

While that probably would’ve been sufficient on its own, Merrell has also added in a luxurious air cushion in the heel to absorb shock from any pebbles, twigs, or hard surfaces.

The molded nylon foot shank will give you great arch support, and is a welcome feature for those who overpronate.

The Sanuk Yoga Sling 2 Print Vintage Sandals may not be ideal for hiking or water sports, but they definitely have their place. If you’re someone who craves cushiness and luxury, this pair will more than accommodate you.

Let’s look at the name, for example. Where does “yoga” come from? From the fact that the footbed is literally made up of squishy yoga mats!

Expand To See More

We’ll admit that most of the best women’s walking sandals probably aren’t ideal for a nice dinner on the beach or for more formal events. However, the Yoga Sling 2 can take you there.

They pair perfectly with a beautiful, flowy dress, just as well as some shorts and a t-shirt. They come in dozens upon dozens of patterns and colors, ranging from nautical-inspired getups to tribal, to just about whatever else suits your character.

The textile upper is as if you took a soft hammock, and finagled it into a perfect thong designed just for your feet. They’re also great if you have issues with circulation in your lower extremities, and can’t deal with restrictive straps.

It kind of goes without repeating, but the foot bed is extremely padded and comfortable; perfect if you have constant foot pain. While they’re probably not going to last you as long as the Teva or Merrels, they’re still quite durable for what they are.

While Sketchers made a big splash onto the market back in the 90s with their trendy styles, they’ve since also become known for their unmatchable comfort.

Regularly worn by nurses, service workers, and more, it’s no surprise that their On The Go 400 Radiance Flip Flop is also one of the most comfortable walking sandals for women.

We’re going to go out on a limb here and say that we didn’t find the style of these all that eye-catching. They’re pretty basic, along with their color options.

However, if comfort and versatility is a top priority for you, these are hard to compete with.

The 100% fabric upper has a kind of creamy, pliable feel to it, which glides over the skin, even after hours of consistent wear.

Right when you strap them on, you’ll notice how lightweight they are, keeping you from fatiguing early on. The responsive 5-gen midsole cushioning is borderline doughy, while still providing the support you deserve.

Much like our last model, the 400’s footbeds are also made with yoga mat material. However, in this case, it’s called “Goga Max Return Energy”, which gives great energy transfer for long periods of standing or walking.

How to Choose the Best Women’s Walking Sandals

best walking sandals for women

To select the best pair of walking sandals for you, you must know your feet and body. Do you overpronate? What kind of style piques your interest? The perfect product is going to be one that meshes best with you. We’ve decided to create the user-friendly buying guide, below, to ensure you’re successful in your search!

Comfort/Support

Even if you don’t have flat feet or heel pain, if you’re going to be walking for long periods of time, you need something with support. Remember, most of us weren’t born with foot pain, but wearing improper shoes is a prominent cause of it. So first and foremost, you need a pair that feels good.

Arch Support

most comfortable womens walking sandals

If you’re used to wearing flip flops, you may have noticed that even after just walking a few blocks, your arches start to ache. That’s because they offer exactly 0% support to your arches. While they may look cute and be cheap, they’re not really made for anything except that: looks.

It is possible to find a pair of sandals which offer the same kind of support that a good pair of running shoes or hiking boots would. In fact, almost all of the products we’ve featured above have it!

This will help encourage proper posture, keeping your back and neck from hurting. Also, it will help correct overpronation and give you the tools to stay comfy even after hours of walking.

Deep Heel Cup

A deep heel cup can make such a huge difference in comfort and energy transfer. These designs will hold your heel in place, rather than allowing it to slide around freely. These are also essential if your ankles roll easily.

Foot Bed

As stated above, the foot bed is going to be the most essential part of your new walking sandals. This section is going to provide you (ideally) with the perfect balance of cushioning and stability.

We love EVA/molded footbeds for this reason. They cradle your feet, and oftentimes contour to the individual shape of your feet, which gives you better push-off.

Adjustability

best walking sandals for arch support

While some people may get lucky and have their sandals and shoes fit perfectly every time, most of us need a bit of adjustability. The sandals above vary widely, but most will have at least one strap to allow for a more custom fit.

If you’re going to be doing a lot of walking, take into consideration that your feet will also swell after a certain point. You’re going to want to have the ability to loosen these straps up to accommodate them.

Material

Most of the products on our list are either going to be made out of a textile/fabric, or leather. Textile material is usually very soft and lightweight, which is great for breathability on hot summer days.

The Teva Verra is one of the few that can be used in and around water due to its textile upper functioning well in moisture. While there are some leather uppers that can do the same, it’s not really recommended and can definitely shorten the life of your sandals.

Sole

The sole is an often overlooked part of footwear, but it plays an incredibly important role. On our guide, you’ll see either rubber soles, synthetic soles, or some kind of mixture of the two.

best sandals for walking long distances

Synthetic

Synthetic can obviously cover a wide range of materials. Oftentimes, manufacturers opt for synthetic soles as a more affordable choice but don’t take into consideration that they’re not going to be as durable as rubber. Again, it depends on the exact makeup but this is often the case.

Rubber

Rubber is the standard for many reasons. One, it’s still not all that expensive to use. Two, it does an excellent job of absorbing shock, and holding up against sharp objects such as twigs or stones. The weight varies, but it’s relatively lightweight as well.

FAQs About Walking Sandals For Women

Q: What exactly is a Metatomical footbed?

A: You may have read this term in a couple of our product reviews. These feature an insole which are anatomically designed to give you excellent support. They’re made to the shape of the foot, which a particular focus on the first metatarsal joint (big toe).

Q: Can I use my own orthotics or insoles in these?

A: With some of them you can, and others you cannot. The KEENs, the Rykas, Clarks, and Skechers, we know that you can.

Q: Which one of these would be the best for water use?

A: We’d hands-down have to say the Tevas. They’re specifically made to be used in-and-around the water. We personally love to keep them nearby after a day of surfing. It makes a much better alternative to walking on the hot sand/cement and provide more support than your typical flip flop.

Tips For Wearing Your Walking Sandals

#1: If you’re planning on wearing your sandals both with and without socks, look for those with at least two straps.
The reason why, is that you’ll need the adjustability to be able to accommodate socks and sockless wear. Even if they’re made of thin fabric, it will make a difference in fit and comfort.

#2: If you want to wear leather sandals by water, make sure to waterproof them.
As we said, we don’t really recommend wearing leather shoes in the water, but if you’re going to do it, at least spray a waterproofing material on them to protect them.

#3: If you’re buying sandals specifically for a trip, make sure to break them in beforehand.
It’s not going to be fun when you want to go sightseeing but you are dealing with blisters and sore points. Try to wear them as much as you can before setting out!

#4: If wearing your shoes in the water, always wash them when you get home.
This goes double if it’s saltwater. The saltwater can start to break down the materials in your sandals after a while, so always rinse them off with a hose.

Final Thoughts

We know there are a lot of wonderful options on here, but which one of them will you be wearing on your upcoming adventures? While all of these are some of the best women’s walking sandals around, we hope that our guide has helped you select the perfect pair for you. Thanks for hanging out with us, and we’ll see you again soon!
