If you’re looking for a Vitamix but find the price too steep, we highly recommend an affordable alternative: the Ninja Professional Countertop Blender.
It’s powerful, easy to use, and obviously great for those on a budget. With 1,100 watts of power and a large 72-ounce pitcher, making big quantities of smoothies or other foods is no issue.
Blending most foods were a breeze, and crushing ice also gave us no difficulties, thanks to the stainless steel blades. However, we did notice that blending some butters and soups were difficult and gave us chunky results.
Aside from the pitcher being quite big, it’s also free of BPA, which is a harmful chemical that health-conscious companies are eradicating from their productions.
In addition, it’s safe to toss in the dishwasher, along with the blade and lid. Aside from that kind of clean-up being simple, the smooth base makes wiping up spills seamless.
It’s neither compact nor large, but small enough to fit inside a cabinet or pantry with no problems. If you don’t have a ton of counter space, this is also a good selection due to its small footprint.
While it may not be perfect, if you’re searching for one of the best shake blenders on a budget, the Ninja can’t be beat.
- Watts: 1200
- Settings: 5, including puree, smoothie, various speeds
- Pitcher Size: 64 oz.

If you’re serious about your food game, the Vitamix Pro Series 750 may be one of the best investments for your kitchen! This model is essentially the Bugatti of the blender world, and it’s easy to see why once you get your hands on one.
The word “versatile” would be an understatement to describe the 750. With five presets, we’re way past the point of just smoothie-making, Make sorbets, purees, and even hot soup!
That’s right, you can make steaming-hot soup under 10 minutes thanks to the friction from the blades! The pulse setting lets you easily chop with the Vitamix, rather than doing it all manually which costs more time and effort.
As settings can also be pre-programmed, you don’t even have to be there babysitting it for it to work. If you live a hectic lifestyle but still care about quality, we can’t recommend it enough.
While it may not have quite the capacity of the Ninja Pro, it does come close, at 64 ounces. In addition, it’s also BPA-free, which we feel is essential in regards to food safety.
It is one of the stronger models, with a 2.2 HP motor that gives you the power to break down or process just about any ingredient while retaining rich flavor.
Create nut butters, grind coffee beans, and crush ice without worrying about damaging the machine, or knead thick breads for a delicious treat!
While this is just a taste of what the Vitamix 750 can offer, it’s easy to see why it ranks as the best smoothie machine.
- Watts: 900
- Settings: 1 Speed
- Pitcher Size: 24 oz.
- Extras: 2 Ninja Cups (24 and 18 oz.), guide with 75 recipes
If you’re always on-the-go, it can be hard to find time to make your smoothies. With the Ninja BL456, we guarantee you won’t have a problem with that.
Coming with 2 Ninja cups, you can choose between a 24 or 18-ounce quantity. As each comes with a convenient to-go lid, you don’t even have to dirty up any dishes.
Simply blend, pop it off, put a lid on, and you’re ready to go. It’s not the most powerful out there, but if you want accessibility, the BL456 is the winner.
Remember, the key here is convenience. They’ve streamlined the product to make it as user-friendly as possible, and for many, that means less buttons to figure out.
As this is a single-speed blender, you obviously only get one speed to choose from.
Despite this, you’ll find it does a surprisingly good job at blending evenly, even when dealing with more dense food items. It’s important to be realistic, though.
With this one, you’re not going to be able to make nut butters and grind coffee beans like you would with some more powerful options.
If you’re on a budget, this is also one of the best smoothie makers. It’s rare to be able to find such an efficient machine at such a low price, so if this fits what you’re looking for, toss it in your cart!
- Watts: 600
- Settings: 1 Speed
- Pitcher Size: Up to 24 oz.
- Extras: 1 tall cup, 2 short cups, 2 re-sealable lids, pocket nutritionist, recipe/manual
Aside from the last model, the NutriBullet NBR-1201 12-Piece High-Speed Blender is the only budget product at this low of a price that operates at a high enough level to make it to our guide.
With patented extraction blades and cyclonic action, it may be small, yet blends up all kinds of veggies, fruits, and more for nutritious shakes.
There’s a reason why it’s one of the biggest names out there in the smoothie maker world!
The compact, bullet-shaped device is wonderful if you don’t have a lot of counterspace to spare, but is still quite powerful given its size.
Coming with one tall and two short ups, you can choose the size of smoothie you’d like to take with you to work in the mornings, to the gym, or whatever suits you!
The 600-watt motor may not be strong in comparison with something like the Vitamix, but for what it does it packs quite the punch.
You receive so much more than one of the best blenders for green smoothies when you order the NutriBullet 12-Piece.
You’ll also receive a pocket nutritionist to make sure your body is in proper health, and a recipe/manual book full of tons of delicious, nutritious ideas for you to try out.
- Watts: 1450
- Settings: 4 Speeds
- Pitcher Size: 64 oz.

While not quite as affordable as the previous two blenders, the Vanaheim CB64 still has a pretty low price tag, considering all it provides.
As one of the best blenders to make smoothies, you can expect a versatile, efficient machine made to make your life a little easier.
With a massive 1450 watts of peak blending power, the CB64 is undoubtedly one of the most powerful on the market, today.
Combine that, with hardened stainless steel 3-layer sawtooth blades, and it can take on just about anything you throw in it.
Crush ice and break down fibrous plant foods with ease to create delicious green shakes or smoothies to power you through your day.
Choose between either manual or automatic modes, depending on how busy you are. The manual speed control lets you stir, chop, mix, puree, or liquify so you can choose exactly how you want your food to come out.
The one-touch, 4 programmed settings makes sure you can multitask while your blender works on its own if you don’t have time to watch it.
This best blender to make smoothies with is extremely user-friendly, partially due to the control panel with the large LED display screen. It will provide you with valuable info such as remaining and elapsed time, as well as adjusting any settings.
When you’re all done, simply add a bit of soap, fill it halfway with water, and choose a speed setting. This way, it self-cleans, leaving you more time to enjoy your creations!
- Watts: 600
- Settings: 5, including crush ice and pulse
- Pitcher Size: 56 oz.

KitchenAid is easily one of the most reputable names in the kitchen appliance world, and their Classic 5-Speed Blender is a perfect example why.
It’s easy on the wallet, durable, and powerful. Coming in either Empire Red, Onyx Black, Silver, or White, you’re sure to find just the right model to work with your home’s design.
With 5 different settings, you can stir, chop, mix, puree, or liquify just about any kind of food product. We loved the “Pulse” mode for crushing up ice perfectly to the size we wanted.
You can also choose the speed at which you’d like it to run. If you’re unsure of the speed you should choose, take advantage of the Intelli-Speed Motor Control.
This setting always runs at the ideal speed, changing depending on the ingredients you have inside the BPA-free pitcher.
The Soft Start Feature is unique, beginning the motor at a slower speed to pull the food towards the blade rather than blowing it away for improved efficiency.
The Steel-Reinforced Coupler also aids in this, transferring energy seamlessly from the motor to blades while ensuring quiet operation.
We can’t say it’s the best we’ve ever seen, but for the price, it’s more than just a good blender for smoothies.
- Watts: 600
- Settings: 8, Green Smoothie, Auto Pulse, Smoothie, Mix, Chop, Blend, Puree, Liquify

Engineered surgical-grade stainless steel blades are ultra-sharp, making any task a breeze. There’s not much else you could ask for!
While more options often mean more complications, their 1-touch versatility simplifies that. The LCD display and timer also helps, showing you speed settings and pre-programmed settings so you can have complete control.

How to Choose the Best Smoothie Maker – Buying Guide
When shopping for a good blender for smoothies, many people make the mistake of picking out any old blender. Why is that a problem?
Because regular blenders often prepare ingredients for cooking, such as chopping up veggies rather than doing it by hand.
What you need for a proper smoothie, is a machine that can create one completely free of lumps. While strawberries are delicious, no one wants to be biting into a frozen chunk of one.
To ensure you’re getting just the right one for you and your household, we’ve created a comprehensive buying guide below. This guide will take you through each step of the way, so you receive the perfect smoothie maker.
As you probably noticed, blenders vary when it comes to the size of the jar. Some feature different sizes, which makes things a bit more convenient, such as with the NutriBullet. Think about the size you’re realistically going to need and use.
If you live on your own or are the only one who will use the smoothie maker, then you’re probably not going to need anything larger than 32 ounces. However, if you live with one of more person, then try opting for anything about 50, and up to 64 ounces.
Aside from the people who will be using it, what kind of ingredients will you be throwing in? If they’re larger objects, you’ll want something with more space to accommodate them and allow the blades to be able to move them around.
As noted above, motors vary quite a bit in wattage. Those featured on our guide vary by about 1000 watts, at times! So, which is the right amount for your needs?
What we could generally consider to be “powerful” would be one rating at least 1000W. This is going to be more than enough for most, but with this, you’ll know that it can take on just about anything. Nuts, seeds, coffee beans, etc. will be no problem.
However, there are some smaller ones that are rated much lower. These are ideal for making smoothies out of ice, berries, bananas, and generally just softer items. Lower-rated machines on our list are generally smaller, too, so you’re not going to want to use large food items anyway.
Sure, some products come with 5 or more settings, but are you really going to need them all? Like anything else, that depends on what you want to do with your blender. If you are going to just make basic smoothies every day, you could probably go with a 1-speed design.
Generally, you’re not going to need any more than 3 different speeds unless you’re also going to be doing some food processing like making nut butters, folding bread doughs, making soups, etc.
We have to say that all of the blade assemblies we’ve reviewed here were satisfactory. Rather than looking at sharpness, we looked at the strength, thickness, and material which actually affect efficiency more.
Stainless steel varies quite a bit, and we did find that no model could compare to the Vitamix’s blades. Theirs are made from hardened, laser-cut stainless steel which had a leg up from the competition.
Container/Ease of Cleaning
While many people look at power and settings, it’s also important to check the container! It is, after all, the part that’s touching the food you’re about to eat. For that reason, we found it essential that the containers were BPA-free.
To make things a bit less messy for you, we highly encourage choosing a model, such as the Breville or Vitamix, which have leak-proof seals. This means that they aren’t going to shoot ingredients everywhere if you don’t hold down the lid yourself.
While on the subject of cleanliness, these models vary quite a bit in how easy they are to clean. About half of them feature self-cleaning, which means you just have to toss in a couple drops of soap, some water, and turn it on.
Others, aren’t too much more difficult, as they can be placed in the dishwasher, so manual cleaning is out of the question.
How long realistically should you have a warranty for? At minimum, we suggest a 1-year warranty. The higher the warranty, the more confident you can feel, as this is a good sign the company is sure about the product quality they’re supplying.
In fact, there are some with 5-year warranties which will give you the peace of mind you need to select that pricier product if it’s what you really want.
Tying in with our last point, you probably noticed the wide range of prices with the above items. Some are under $100 while others are hundreds of dollars.
First, think about how much you’re willing to spend, and come up with a budget for yourself. No matter what your budget is, you should be able to find one that suits it on our guide.
In relation to warranty, if you have a product covered for years, you’ll probably feel more comfortable spending a bit more.
FAQs About Smoothie Makers
Q: What can I put in my smoothie maker?
A: This will depend on the product you choose. For example, the Vitamix Blender will let you put nuts and coffee beans in it, while the NutriBullet is ideal for softer items. Generally, though, you’ll be able to put soft fruits and vegetables in any of these.
Q: What is a pulse function?
A: This is made for when you just need little bursts of power at high speeds. Each time you press the button, it will give a burst, so you have full control over how you want to use it, while avoiding over-processing.
Q: Can I process hot ingredients?
A: You should only process hot ingredients with the Vitamix.
Q: How can I chop ingredients in my smoothie maker?
A: You can do this by using the above-mentioned “Pulse” function. Pulse until you reach the desired texture while stopping and stirring often.
Tips For Using Your Smoothie Blender
#1: If your blender is smoking, unplug and allow it to cool.
This is typically due to the binding between the cutting unit clutch and cutting assembly connecting to the motor. Once cool, check it out and see if the blades can spin freely. If not, the cutting unit must be replaced.
#2: Learn how to load the container for optimal results.
Liquids are first, then soft veggies/fruits, then greens, and finally ice.
#3: To thicken a smoothie, add more frozen fruit, ice, or frozen yogurt.
To thin it out, add small amounts of water, milk or juice. To make it creamier, avocado can’t be beat. As it has a mild flavor, it rarely overtakes any other ingredients. Alternatively, add in ice cream or frozen yogurt.
#4: To make your smoothie less sweet, add a bit of lemon juice.
To make it sweeter, add in a bit of honey, agave, or maple syrup. We personally like using watermelon instead of water for a sweeter result, too.
Now that you know pretty much anything you could ever want to about selecting a good smoothie maker, which one will be making its home in your kitchen? It’s important to select the right one for you, and we hope that our guide has helped you pick out the perfect product. Thanks for joining us, and we’ll see you again shortly!
