CrossFit Glove Reviews

The JerkFit WODies are our Editors Choice as the best crossfit gloves for women if you’re looking for attractive CrossFit gloves that are low in padding, but high in wrist support. You’ll find they have three, small finger holes rather than the “normal” two-holed grips.

Instead of the more popular leather material, these are made in the USA, with a durable, hypoallergenic, latex-free, woven neoprene similar to elastic.

They give an extra barrier to give a “natural glide” on the bar, absorbing friction while staying thin enough to prevent any bunching.

The small grooves within the grips are designed to hold a good amount of chalk, giving you an even bigger advantage.

The minimal feel is coveted by many athletes, giving a full callous protection, with a high level of flexibility. The 3” elastic weightlifting wrist straps are perfect for heavy lifting, while the user-friendly, 2-stage hook-and-loop closure lets you adjust the tension easily and quickly.

Fingers are completely exposed to give you a better grip, while the material absorbs sweat to keep you even more secure.

Finally, the gloves come in 8 different colors/patterns so you are likely to find something that will match your style or tastes!

The leather grips work to form to the shape of the bar as you continue to use them, and the wrist straps are comfortable, yet supportive enough.

Each one comes in various sizes, and vary a bit depending on the colors you select. The black grips are a bit thinner and made with suede, while the tan and grey ones are natural leather and are similar to the way baseball gloves break in.

The gloves are mainly composed of neoprene, which isn’t as durable as leather, but is very comfortable and stretches with movement.

If you’re sick of torn skin and callouses, then you’ll enjoy the grips that are just the right thickness to protect the skin, without affecting grip. Longer wrist wraps offer superior support than most competitor products, while never affecting performance negatively.

The only real issue we had with these ones, which, aside from durability overall of the neoprene, is that we noticed the PVC leather/silicone grip did begin to peel off a bit after a couple of months but overall some of the best workout gloves we tried!

How to Choose the Best CrossFit Gloves – Buying Guide

While CrossFit gloves are pretty straightforward, they still vary quite a bit. To ensure you’re choosing the best pair for you and your workout needs, we’ve decided to create a user-friendly, detailed buying guide.

best crossfit gloves

Durability

Are you rough and tough on your gloves? Chances are that you are. Genuine leather is going to be the most durable material for CrossFit gloves, but not everyone likes the higher price tag that comes with it.

Leather is great in the fact that it can be “broken in”, similar to how a baseball glove works. It becomes extremely comfortable at this point, and even forms to the shape of the bar, making it easier to grip.

However, some neoprene gloves can also be quite durable, if they’re structured correctly. Generally speaking, however, this isn’t the case.

Wrist Support

Supporting the wrists is a huge function of CrossFit grips. Wrists are susceptible to injury, particularly while working out so heavily.

To support the wrists, look for a glove that features an adequate amount of padding around the wrist, that is also easily adjustable, and preferably can be adjusted to at least 3 positions.

If the wrist straps are a bit longer, these are preferable, as they provide a further level of support. However, keep in mind that you may prefer the feeling of shorter ones.

There are typically two types of closures/fastenings, which are Velcro, or hook-and-eye closures. Occasionally, you’ll have slip-ons, but we don’t really recommend them, as you can’t adjust them like the others.

Velcro is our favorite, as it’s so easy to use, and can be adjusted the quickest.

Grip

Typically, in CrossFit workouts, you’ll be doing all kinds of exercises. You’ll generally be lifting weights, jumping rope, doing pull-ups, rowing, and so much more.

These exercises require a strong, solid grip that is not going to slip off. Holding onto bars, jumping rope, lifting weights, etc. all require you to hold on to something, which means you need gloves with sufficient grip, to avoid injury, while preventing callouses and skin rips.

We prefer genuine leather grips, due to their durability and ability to form to the shape of the bar, however, it also depends on personal preference. Silicone padding is extremely comfortable, but occasionally, not as “sticky”.

Padding

Another benefit of gloves is comfort. CrossFit can be really hard on the hands, creating callouses due the pressure of holding on to bars and such.

Padding is what you’ll want to help combat this discomfort – particularly on the palm, and even on the back of the hand. Padding will keep you comfy, while also helping to provide support and decrease the chance of injury.

The thickness of padding will vary, depending on the gloves you select. While you may be tempted to go for thicker padding, keep in mind that the added thickness could make it a bit more difficult to keep a solid grip on the bar.

Textured surfaces such as a suede or rubber coating can offer more traction, to help keep a superior grip.

Breathability

Breathability is another aspect to take into consideration with any kind of physical exercise, as you’ll most likely be sweating and generating heat.

When it comes to grip being so important, you’ll have to take special importance in considering how breathable your gloves are. Sweat can affect your grip, which not only affects performance, but can increase the chance of injury.

Leather is generally not very breathable, but this will depend on the style of glove you select. Neoprene is more breathable, but typically not as durable.

Fingers

As you may have noticed, the amount of finger holes or type of fingers they have depend on the model. Most feature partial fingers, where everything from your second finger joint is exposed.

This provides a great amount of mobility and freedom, which is perfect for a solid grip, while providing comfort and support.

Two finger holes can often increase pressure in the space between fingers, so we preferred those with at least three finger holes, but this will all come back to what you prefer.

FAQs For CrossFit/Cross Training Gloves

You probably still have a few questions, and chances are, there are others out there who have already asked them. We’ve gone ahead and compiled the most frequently asked questions to help you out.

Q: Are gloves absolutely necessary for CrossFit workouts?

A: While they’re definitely not required, they will absolutely help you out. If you have sensitive skin, palms that tend to sweat a lot, or would just like some additional support and comfort, you’ll enjoy having specialized gloves. Not only that, they’ll help prevent abrasions and the formation of hard callouses.

Q: Are there any disadvantages to using these gloves?

A: No glove is perfect. Adding an additional layer between your hands and the bar can make things a bit more difficult, depending on the model. If they’re too thick, they can potentially hinder the grip you have, and can become a bit of a nuisance.

This is why, if you notice, most of our selections were relatively minimalistic/thin. Thicker gloves can also force the bar towards your fingers and away from your palms, making you hold the weights with your fingers, which can increase the risk of injury.

Final Thoughts

We hope that our guide has helped you find the best CrossFit gloves for you and your workout needs. While there are a wide variety of options out there, we can guarantee that if you select any of the above products, that you’ll be receiving a high level of quality and performance.
