Real Women, Real Results:  The 21 Day Fix

An interview with Andie Conway

What motivated you to try the 21 Day Fix?

Well, I’m 45 years old.  Last year I made a big change in my personal life. Some people might refer to it as a mid-life crisis, but all I can say is I was feeling my age.

I’m not a sedentary person nor was I overweight at the time, but my body felt kind of flabby to me.  Like I had no tone or definition.

What appealed to you about the 21 Day Fix?

I wasn’t sure what kind of fitness program would be best for me, so I researched different options. I liked that the 21 Day Fix offered both exercise and eating plans.

I’m a big believer that, for good health, you have to tackle both your physical activity and to be aware of what you feed your body.

The program was also convenient for my busy schedule. I work 3 12-hour shifts a week as a nurse. On top of that I’m a mom.  My work schedule varies, so it was tough for me to commit to any fitness class schedules, such as Zumba or yoga.  I loved the flexibility the program offered in terms of time.

The program promised results within 21 days.  All I had to do was 30 minutes a day of exercise and eat a reasonable diet.  I liked that idea!

In terms of food, the program didn’t dictate specific food you couldn’t eat.  It offered guidance in terms of suggestions and provided colorful plastic containers to help you measure out appropriate portions. It didn’t require me to buy any special meals or food products, though they do produce a popular shake mix called “Shakeology”.

So, you chose to try the 21 Day Fix.  How did you like it?  Did you get results?

Yes, absolutely.  I did lose weight, though that wasn’t my intention when I started the program.  I’m not sure how much I lost but I did go down from size 8 to a 6.  I would say there were three things that impressed me most.

I didn’t realize how weak my muscle tone had been before doing the program.  After a few days, before I even saw any visual results, I noticed I felt stronger in general.  I could tell my muscles were getting a workout.  My posture improved.  I guess that’s because the program was working my core.

When results did become visual, I could see a definition in different muscle groups.  For example my stomach became flatter.  My upper body was firmer. I could see the lines between my biceps and triceps, for example.

I guess the third thing worth mentioning was the improvement in my eating. For one, I never realized what large portions I used to eat until I began to use their measuring containers.  The containers are designed to help you maintain healthy serving sizes.  The different sizes and colors correspond to food categories. For example, there is one for fat, one for protein, etc.   Using the containers was eye-opening because I had always considered myself to be a pretty healthy eater.

Given your positive experience with the 21 Day Fix, who would you recommend the program to?

Well, of course I would recommend it to anyone because I’m a big fan, but I think there are certain types of women who would do best with the 21 Day Fix.

Because you experience the benefits so rapidly, this program is good for women who want to see the fruits of their labor as soon as possible.  I found that feeling and seeing the results so quickly caused a snowball effect in my motivation.

I think if a woman is going to consider the 21 Day Fix, she has to make a commitment to do the program as designed for a minimum of the 21 days. You have to do the program as it was designed.  No skipping days or making up substitutions for the daily exercise routines. If someone can’t stick to something for 21 days straight, it’s probably not a fit for them.

The program is a steal in terms of its cost. It’s a great option for anyone on a tight budget.  There are no gym memberships or daily fitness classes that could come close to this program.  It’s probably good for women who need some structure.  For example, I needed something to follow. I’ve never been the type to throw on my workout clothes head down the road for a run.  I needed instructions!

A couple more things come to mind that I hadn’t thought of earlier. First, you can exercise in your p.j.’s. I love that no one sees me working out- that I can do it all in the privacy of my home and at any time or the day or night I choose!

I only mentioned the physical benefits of the 21 Day Fix.   After noticing changes in my body, I began to feel more attractive and confident.  I started getting compliments all the time (and I still do!)  In general, my mood became more positive and my outlook improved. These changes helped me get through that rough patch that prompted me to get into shape in the first place.

Like I said, I would recommend the 21 Day Fix to anyone.  I’m sure glad I did it.
